7 Things You Don’t Know About "Moxie’s Problem" by Hank Quense @hanque99 #SciFi #Humor #Fantasy

Seven things you don’t know about Moxie’s Problem

The original Moxie story was a short story that I couldn't sell. I loved Moxie’s character and I was determined to put her into her own novel.

I was half-way through Moxie’s Problems when I put it on the side to write a series of non-fiction books called Self-publishing Guides. I did that because I got angry at all the misinformation floating around the internet on self-publishing.

I was able to return to the Moxie novel fairly easily because I always develop a series of mind-maps for my novels before I start to write the first draft. I had maps for the major characters, the plots and subplots and a third which is a graphical synopsis. These mind-maps allowed me to get back into the novel very quickly.

Some of the adventures in the novel, especially for King Artie were originally short stories I wrote a long time ago, but were never published. The Dogs of War and the Isolde adventure are two such short stores. The initial football game between the Knights and the Saxons was a short story I sold four or five times.

Originally, the novel was set in a fantasy land and Moxie was a dwarf. Her three knightly companions were a dwarf, an elf and a human. The fantasy setting conflicted with my plan to use Camelot as a backdrop so I had to change it.

The Camelot background bothered me for a while. The problem was my story bashed against the traditional Camelot legends and not in a small way. My Camelot was radically different and I felt it would annoy reads who hoped for a retelling of the traditional legends. My solution to this problem came with a sprinkling of scifi dust. Once I realized my Camelot took place in a parallel universe, I had my justification and it even encouraged me to develop more non-traditional aspects of Camelot.

One character I really enjoyed writing about was Tristan. In the story he is Camelot’s Bard and the world’s worst poet. I wrote a number of doggerel poems for him. I also made him a schizophrenic. His warrior self and his poet self are in a constant battle for supremacy of his mind. His poet self wants to soothe enemies with words, while his warrior self wants to attack audiences with his sword.

Moxie's Problem

Do you enjoy untypical coming-of-age stories? Well, you won’t find one more untypical that Moxie’s Problem. Moxie is an obnoxious, teen-age princess who has never been outsider her father’s castle. Until now. The real world is quite different and she struggles to come to grips with reality. The story take space against a backdrop of Camelot. But it isn’t the Camelot of legends. It’s Camelot in a parallel universe. So, all bets are off!

SUPERHUMAN NATURE by Brandon Overall #AmReading #Excerpt #SciFi

Hitchens!”
Neil heard his name in the distance, but his eyes were closed.  He didn’t know where this sound was coming from.
“Hitchens, wake up! They’re coming!”
Neil realized his eyes were closed because he was asleep.  He opened them to find a figure over him, shaking his shoulder to wake him up.  As his vision cleared, he could clearly see that the figure was a man who was wearing an Army uniform with a Kevlar helmet and protective vest.  He could also see that he was not in his bedroom anymore.  He didn’t know where he was, but he sensed the urgency in the man’s voice, and knew that they needed him.
He got out of bed and found himself fully clothed in a uniform as well.  He did not have a vest or helmet, but he somehow knew that it did not matter.  They were not necessary.
“Get up there Hitchens!  We need you now!”
The man looked familiar. Neil saw his nametape.  ‘Steele’, the name of the Professor of Military Science in his ROTC program.  That explained why the man looked familiar.
However, this man did not have the black oak leaf of a Lieutenant Colonel on his chest.  In its place was a single star.
Neil ran outside of the mud hut he was sleeping in and found himself in an unfamiliar part of the world.  He was not in Michigan.  This was not his college town.  The ground was covered in sandy dirt and rocks.  The buildings around him were all made of mud or wood.  He saw tan tents, generators, and giant four wheeled vehicles that he didn’t recognize.
As his drowsiness faded, he began to recall the facts.  He was somewhere in the desert in Afghanistan, and he was on a Forward Operating Base.  Of course; this was his life now.  Upon further reflection, the thought of being at a college seemed silly.  It had been weeks since he was at college.
He knew what the General woke him for.  He had a job to do.  It was a job that only he could do.  He searched for the tower near his mud shelter that would give him vantage over the entire area surrounding the FOB.  He didn’t search with his eyes.  He didn’t need to.  He searched with his mind.  The whole FOB was his.  His body and the base and everything inside of it were tools at his disposal.
The tower was a short distance away.  He climbed to the top and saw what the General was concerned about.  Off in the distance, a little over 3 km away, were dozens of trucks and busses filled with people.  The vehicles were headed towards the southern wall of the FOB.  Rather, they would have been, except there wasn’t a southern wall anymore.  It had just been blown up minutes before Neil had awoken.  In its place was a smoking pile of rubble.
The men in the trucks were carrying weapons.  They were coming to break through the wall and try to overrun the FOB.  With that many people, there was no doubt that they would be able to inflict heavy casualties.  Neil wasn’t worried about that, though.  He knew they would never even get close.  That was why Neil was there – to stop them.
Neil closed his eyes.  He did not need them.  He felt all around him.  He could feel all of the beating hearts, all of the ancient stone and sand, and all of the dust particles in the air around him.  He pushed his mind outwards to the south.  He felt the snakes, the spiders, the scorpions, the struggling plant life, and finally the men in the trucks.
They were his now.  He could do anything he wanted with them.  He knew there was only one thing that he wanted them to do.  He wanted them to die.  There were many ways to make them die.  He decided it would be quick.  These men were not evil, they were just misguided.  They were defending their homeland against perceived aggressors.  Neil was not concerned with the politics of war.  He was only concerned with doing the job he was sent there to do, because he was the only one who could do it.
Neil felt for the stem connecting the brain and the spine in each of these men.  He held his open hand in front of his face and imagined the sensation of closing his fist around a Styrofoam cup.  That’s all it would take to finish his job so he could go back to sleep.  Neil closed his fist.  The trucks in the distance slowed to a halt.  His job was done.

Superhuman Nature is Brandon Overall’s first novel. It was written and published during his first deployment to Afghanistan as a 2nd Lieutenant in late 2013.
Neil Hitchens was a senior ROTC Cadet in college. He was just weeks away from graduating and becoming an Officer in the United States Army, until a strange dream set off a chain of events that would twist his life into something he could have never prepared for.
In the days following his dream, several strange happenings occurred that he began to suspect were the result of his own actions. Before long, he discovered that he had the ability to control the world around him with his mind.
What started out as an unpredictable ability quickly evolved into an extraordinary power that had the capacity to change the world. It didn’t take long for the government to find out what Neil could do.
They knew having such limitless potential on the side of the US Military could give them limitless political influence, and they would stop at nothing to get Neil to do their bidding. They would find out what happens when you back a dangerous animal into a corner.
Neil spent his whole life believing he would amount to greatness, but he never expected how greatness could corrupt even the most innocent of minds.

PARTY OF GIFTS by D. Aliesh #AmReading #SciFi #Fiction

I knew that I would be doing this tonight. I also knew that I was no longer able to ignore these dreams or my gift any longer. Something was pulling me to this case more than I had been pulled since I left my hometown. Maybe it was because Jessica was from my area, I couldn’t be sure of why any of this stuff happened to me. All of my life, the only explanation was that I had what I had and could do what I could because I got a double dose of it. I was part of a family with coveted gifts that all of the women inherited. It was like God had a hat full of gifts, and before we were born, we all reached in and picked out a different one. When one of the women in the family passed on, their gift was more or less up for grabs. I had somehow defied those rules, and the only logical reason was that my granddaddy’s side of the family had blessed me also.
With his family, it had skipped two generations, before another gift had appeared. I didn’t know how much of the gift I wanted from them though. They were the types that certain members had dabbled in black magic. I was taught at a very young age, that if you open yourself to the bad arts, you are slowly rejecting the good. Being that my family was very strong in the Christian faith, I reveled in the good that my gift could do. Lately, however, these sort of paranormal blessings had been under such scrutiny by the church that I had decided to ignore the calling. I packed up my bags, and moved back to the city that I had done my undergraduate studies at, in hopes of just being another doctor with a private practice, among the many. This move had allowed me to reconnect with my ex-fiancĂ© to the point that we had actually moved back into together. Everything seemed to have been on the up and up, until a few days ago.

The modern day heroes assembled in this journey get to go to places most people will never see. With the gifts of the spirit and some other talents added to the bunch, they restore faith, hope in order into the world, while shaking it up in themselves. If you are a sci-fi extraordinaire looking for a good read, or if you need an escape from worldly limitations…join the cast of Party of Gifts.

WHAT HAVE WE LOST WHEN NO ONE LOSES?

The New Texas Storm haven't won a game in two hundred years, because every game ends in a tie.
Following a worldwide pandemic and The Concord, which brought peace to a troubled post-apocalyptic world, winning was condemned as primitive behavior. Since then, citizens have been divided into two classes: a wealthy class who lives forever and a lower class of Temporals who just try to live.

Soccer player Ledger Dent has been offered an opportunity to join the wealthy Eternals, which seems to be a triumph until he meets an old coach and slowly begins to unravel why competition is unacceptable. It's then that he realizes more than his personal glory hinges on a victory.

Meet & Greet with Leah Rhyne #AmReading #Horror #Fiction

Where do you get support from? Do you have friends in the industry?
My family is sooooooo supportive. My brothers are always among my first readers, as is my husband. My parents, too. I also have made some great writing buddies through the years. Twitter and LitReactor have created some fabulous writing communities and if you can be a part of some of them, well, you’re probably a step or two ahead of the game…at least in terms of finding people to encourage you and help you along the way.
How much sleep do you need to be your best?
I’m an insomniac. Anything over 5 hours a night is CAKE.
Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support?
For sure my family. Everything is because of them, and for them.
Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?
My husband and I made a deal last year…I’ve got about two years to start making enough money writing to help support the family. If I can’t do that, I’ll eventually have to get a “day” job again. Luckily freelancing is really helping there. So long as I can keep writing as my job, in almost any way, I’ll be pretty thrilled. I love writing, and I love my job, so I want to keep it.
Also, I’d love to sit on a panel at a Con someday.
It is vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing, tell us about your marketing campaign?
I’m so bad at marketing. I’ve done some zombie-themed events with this book, which is always fun, and I’ve connected with tons of writers and readers via Twitter. But this is NOT my strong suit, and I have a TON to learn here.
Tell us about your new book? What’s it about and why did you write it?
Undead America is a zombie series with heart and soul. I stumbled into this world by accident….picture this: it was a time before The Walking Dead was on AMC (yes, there really was such a world). I’d grown up watching horror and sci-fi flicks with my dad, but when I sat down to write my first novel (it was NaNoWriMo 2010), I planned something more YA Contemp, along the lines of Juno. But I floundered fast, and when my husband jokingly suggested I write about “zombie cows,” something clicked. I added zombies to my little world, and the rest is history.
It wound up not being YA exactly…or at all. There are lots of really adult themes going on (sex, torture, abuse) and really heinous people causing all sorts of trouble. There are also tons of literary and historical references throughout the story. A member of the podcast, Books and Booze, called it a “literary zombie book,” and I felt like that was about the best compliment I could receive.
If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask?
I have this weird obsession with Anne Frank, so it would probably be here. I mean really…she was a teenager, locked up for years, and the work of literature she produced was just so wise beyond her years. I’ve read her diary dozens of times, and I still discover new things about the way she viewed the world, or the hope she never entirely lost. And that blows my mind. How could you not lose hope when your world has fallen apart around your ears? I’d love to ask her that.
When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?
Relax? What’s that? I have a five year old, a husband, pets. I don’t know what this relaxing thing is. :D BUT on the off chance that I have some time to kill and nothing imminently due, I’ll go for a long run or take a hot bath.
Do you have any tips on how writers can relax?
A long run or a hot bath is always nice. Also, as a writer, here are your two must-have vices: coffee and wine.
How often do you write? And when do you write?
I write something every day. It may be a freelance project, it may be a short story, it may be part of whatever novel I’m working on, but it’s a daily thing. I try to write less on weekends so I can spend more time with my family, but chances are I get something done.
I write best first thing in the morning, with a cup of coffee by my side. It seems to be when I’m least inhibited, least likely to call myself dumb and put my computer away. That said, I edit best in the afternoon.
Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule?
Since writing is my full-time job, I do it every day. Otherwise I don’t get paid. It’s no longer an optional thing; I always have a freelance column or three due.
My weekday schedule is this: wake up, help husband get out the door for work, take the kiddo to school, then home to write, exercise, and keep the house reasonably free from too much clutter. Cleaning is definitely the thing I let slide. I do get less done in the summer (summer vacation anyone?) but that’s to be expected.

Millions died when the zombie plague swept the country. For the survivors, the journey has just begun. Jenna, Sam, and Lola are still alive. Jenna avoids human contact, traveling East Coast backroads with her boyfriend, a dog named Chicken, and a Louisville Slugger. Sam escapes to the mountains, where he’s conscripted into a zombie-slaying militia sent on nightly raids to kill the undead…and innocent civilians.

Lola’s imprisoned in the “safety” of a zombie-free New Orleans hotel, but life grows more dangerous when her brother gets bitten by a zombie. Jenna arrives in the French Quarter, lured by the false promises of New Orleans’ drunken leader. There, she’s ripped away from her boyfriend, drugged, and dumped in a death camp after refusing Franklin’s sexual advances. Jenna and Lola’s lives collide there, where the dead live and the dying are victims of gruesome medical experiments. Escape isn’t easy: release the genetically-enhanced zombies from the lab to create a diversion, slip away, and don’t get eaten. When Sam arrives, will he join the right side of the battle?

Getting Personal with Scott Moon @ScottMoonWriter #SciFi #AmWriting #AmReading

If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask?
My mother’s father Jack, my father’s mother Ruth and my aunt Debbie, and my wife’s grandfather Joseph. I wish I had a chance to know them better. As for famous people, I’d have Stephen King, Michael Connelly, J. K. Rowling, and George R. R. Martin over for dinner as long as they promised to tell me I’m a great writer.
When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?
I enjoy reading and audio books, of course. Playing with my kids. Working out. Getting brutalized in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class. I like to play guitar and watch movies.
Do you have any tips on how writers can relax?
I think all writers should take time for exercise each day. It clears the head and helps with the endurance needed. Writing novels takes time and commitment. Sometimes it is beneficial to focus on others, complete the honey-do list and listen attentively. Turning of the phone and social media can be surprisingly liberating.
How often do you write? And when do you write?
I write every day. My schedule is ridiculous; I’ve been on call 24/7 for the last eleven years and work at least two jobs in addition to being a husband and parent. I try to put time in first thing in the morning and before bed. Lunch breaks, kid’s nap time–it’s all good.
Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule?
I tell myself:
Finish what you write. Try to avoid the distraction of a newer, shinier story. When it’s done, you can put it aside, but you don’t have to. Stephen King advises this kind of break, but it is okay to dive right into a second draft, especially if you are primarily concerned with plot and structure. Taking a break is good. Once the structure issues are decided, a break can help bring freshness to the project.
Don’t talk about or share a manuscript until it is done (unless you’re trying to kill your momentum). Keep track of time spent writing or word counts or both. Either can work.
Save each version in a separate, clearly labeled computer file. This makes it easier to take chances with the current draft.
When you decide to quit, don’t.
Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going?
I imagine a day without writing, and realize such freedom seems pointless. I also remind myself the formula to success is simple. Work equals results. I know I can improve, and that is the coolest thing about the journey.
What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
I want people to see and experience new things and relish the entertainment value of fictional conflict. I hope my words connected them with emotionally interesting characters.
What’s your favorite meal?
Six months ago, the answer would have been steak, or possibly Snickers. However, I’ve been eating vegan for a while now. This is a hard question to answer, because we eat something different everyday in our house, all of it awesome. My wife makes incredible Quinoa Chile.
What movie do you love to watch?
Master and Commander.
How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?
Facebook, and especially Twitter, are great if you can determine who is a machine and who is a real person. I use Hootsuite to schedule three to five promotional tweets a day. The rest I do by hand. If I tweet “thanks for the follow” I probably used my thumbs.
I’ve met some of my best writing friends on Twitter, so I love it. Social media is useful and fun, but a huge time suck.
If you could do any job in the world what would you do?
I’d join the military, serve my country, human kind, and see the world.
What are you most passionate about? What gets you fired up?
I get really annoyed with judgmental people who don’t have empathy. And I can’t stand hate mongers.

Lost Hero

Changed by captivity and torture, hunted by the Reapers of Hellsbreach and wanted by Earth Fleet, Kin Roland hides on a lost planet near an unstable wormhole.

When a distant space battle propels a ravaged Earth Fleet Armada through the same wormhole, a Reaper follows, hunting for the man who burned his home world. Kin fights to save a mysterious native of Crashdown from the Reaper and learns there are worse things in the galaxy than the nightmare hunting him. The end is coming and he is about to pay for a sin that will change the galaxy forever.

Books

Enemy of Man: Book One in the Chronicles of Kin Roland was written for fans of military science fiction and science fiction adventure. Readers who enjoyed Starship Troopers or Space Marines will appreciate this genre variation. Powered armor only gets a soldier so far. Battlefield experience, guts, and loyal friends make Armageddon fun.

Movies

If you love movies like Aliens, Predator, The Chronicles of Riddick, or Serenity, then you might find the heroes and creatures in Enemy of Man dangerous, determined, and ready to risk it all. It’s all about action and suspense, with a dash of romance—or perhaps flash romance.

From the Author

Thanks for your interest in my novel, Enemy of Man. I hope you chose to read the book and enjoy every page.

Meet & Greet with #SciFi #Author of Superhuman Nature - Brandon Overall

What writing are you most proud of?
-So far the only thing I have written is my novel Superhuman Nature but I’m really happy with how it turned out! http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FGYIIPY
What are you most proud of in your personal life?
-I am most proud of following my dream and becoming an Officer in the Army.  It took a lot of work, but it was definitely worth it.  My life is exactly where I want it right now.
What books did you love growing up?
-I didn’t read a whole lot growing up, but I did love the Harry Potter series (who doesn’t?) and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.  I also really like the book Watchers by Dean Koontz.
Who is your favorite author?
-I would definitely have to say J.K. Rowling
What book genre of books do you adore?
-Most types of fantasy and sci-fi
What book should everybody read at least once?
Starship Troopers.  It’s got a lot of really thought provoking commentary.
Is there any books you really don’t enjoy?
-Just can’t get into Romance.  I don’t think I’m part of the demographic that’s supposed to enjoy it, though.
What do you hope your obituary will say about you?
-That I was survived by my children who received my massive fortune.
Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?
-I grew up in Novi, Michigan and lived there my entire life.  After I graduated college and started my career in the Army I’ve been moving around a lot.  I went from Ft. Lewis, Washington to Ft. Gordon, Georgia.  Right now I’m in Afghanistan, but I will be returning to Georgia soon!
How did you develop your writing?
-I wrote.  That’s all there is to it.  Most of it came from writing in school.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
-I write best in the mornings for some reason.  When other people are normally still sleeping (6-8 AM) I am sipping on coffee and writing.  In the evenings, sometimes music will inspire me.  Once I get a good thought train going, I can pump out 3000-4000 words in a single sitting, but then I usually have writers block for a day or two afterwards.
