Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?

Yes, tons of people. Networking is very important. Sometimes, the best information is a closely guarded secret and you have to know the right people to find the right deals.

How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?

Personally I don’t think Twitter is all it’s cracked up to be. It’s become a ‘follow me and I’ll follow you’ platform where authors spam their books more than convey meaningful information.

How do you think people perceive writers?

Probably that we lounge around all day in our pajamas when really we’re stressing over not having a clever enough idea, writer’s block, or even finding time to write in the first place.

How do you feel about self-publishing?

I think for the most part, self-published authors tend to sacrifice quality for cost. They don’t think spending a few thousand dollars on a good editor is worth it, hoping their friend, who was an English major, is good enough. Or they buy stock photo images for their book covers instead of something custom. It’s one of the reasons self-published authors rarely make more than $500 a year by selling their books. On the other hand, if you want to publish your book just to say you’ve published something and not try to make it a career or business, then self-publishing is a great, cost effective way to accomplish that.

Do you find the time to read?

Absolutely. I think every author needs to at least read 12 books a year, at a minimum for your own education. There have been many times when I’ve read a passage and thought, ‘Wow, I really liked how the author phrased that’ or described something. Reading is learning for authors. Just this year alone, I’ve read 70 books.

What is your greatest strength as a writer?
Whilst I genuinely take advice and criticism well, I don’t take “instructions” well. My writing is my writing, as edited by disinterested third party professionals. If you read my work you can be sure that it’s “my” work – of course, as influenced by what I see and hear around me, including receiving advice and criticism. I do my own research but I rely on others to explain to me the meaning of much of what I unearth. In short, my greatest strength is my drive to say what I want to say in the most effective manner that I can muster, without succumbing to being forced in a vanilla jelly mould.

What’s your greatest character strength?
Take your pick. Either:
I have a sense of humour that is sufficiently well developed to enable me to mock myself when I start to take myself too seriously. Humour is a gentle pin for pricking the ego bubble.
Or
Persistence. Like a fox terrier, I’m still holding the bone long after everyone else has gone home.

What’s your weakest character trait?
Take your pick. Either:
I too often say what I think without thinking
Or
Too short a fuse and too blunt when I’m tired or frustrated.

How do you work through self doubt and fear?
I wait patiently until they pass. If I’m not going to take my strengths seriously then I’m certainly not going to take my weaknesses seriously either. We are all unique and we all have something unique to offer the world. The trick is to find out what it is and work within your limitations. There isn’t a man or woman alive who hasn’t made mistakes. The bigger you dare to dream, the larger the mistakes you will inevitably make. I’ve trained my ego not to be afraid of making mistakes. It’s more productive to act and then admit if/when one is wrong, than to sit and do nothing because of doubts and fears. But the flip side is this: I try not to let my successes go to my head.

What writing are you most proud of?
When I was writing my newspaper column, I forecast that Communist China would open its doors to trade with the West. This was at a time when China was still generally regarded as implacably communist. When the doors were finally flung open, I understood more clearly what was driving international affairs. That is what enabled me to write my two novels with clarity of purpose. The reality is this: politicians of today are generally not interested in you and me; they are interested in feathering their own nests. So, if you imagine yourself as a crooked politician and you ask yourself: “what would a crooked politician do under these circumstances” you can cut through all the media hype and garbage and get to the truth.

What the opening of China’s markets taught me was that, typically, when a politician stands up in public and proclaims loudly that he is against something, you can probably make a safe bet that he’s actually in favour of it. And now ask yourself: “Why am I prepared to accept this abominable behaviour?” The short answer you will probably give is: “Well, what can I do about it?” Aha! And that’s where my two novels come in. They are not intended to be prescriptive. But they are intended to communicate the principle that the individual is certainly not powerless in today’s world. At the end of the day, the power lies with the people. The politicians and the media work to dumb down the people with sound bites that are often out of context. My novels work to enlighten the people. And, if you understand how things work, then you can draw a line in the sand and say: No More! I don’t believe what’s coming out of your silver tongued mouth. You no longer deserve my vote! Get it right or get out! That article on China’s true intentions – and being subsequently proven correct – was a seminal experience for me.

There is an energy force in the world—known to the Ancients—that has largely escaped the interest of the modern day world. Why? There are allusions to this energy in the Chinese I-Ching, in the Hebrew Torah, in the Christian Bible, in the Hindu Sanskrit Ramayana and in the Muslim Holy Qur’an. Its force is strongest within the Earth’s magnetic triangles.

About the Author:

In 1987, Brian and his young family migrated from South Africa to Australia where he was employed in Citicorp’s Venture Capital division. He was expecting that Natural Gas would become the world’s next energy paradigm but, surprisingly, it was slow in coming. He then became conscious of the raw power of self-serving vested interests to trump what – from an ethical perspective – should have been society’s greater interests. 

Eventually, in 2005, with encouragement from his long suffering wife, Denise, he decided to do something about what he was witnessing: Beyond Neanderthal was the result; The Last Finesse is the prequel. 

The Last Finesse is Brian’s second factional novel. Both were written for the simultaneous entertainment and invigoration of the thinking element of society. It is a prequel to Beyond Neanderthal, which takes a visionary view of humanity’s future, provided we can sublimate our Neanderthal drive to entrench pecking orders in society. The Last Finesse is more “now” oriented. Together, these two books reflect a holistic, right brain/left brain view of the challenges faced by humanity; and how we might meet them. All our problems – including the mountain of debt that casts its shadow over the world’s wallowing economy – are soluble.

Why do you write?

I love to write, and I also have a need to write. And I have so many stories yet to be written that’s it’s finding the time to write.

What are you most proud of in your personal life?

Other than my children, who are respectful, kind and make me so proud every day. Is my career as an author.

 What books did you love growing up?

I loved the Little House on the Prairie books, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I reread them, over and over.

What book genre of books do you adore?

I love two well written romance, and romantic suspense.

Is there any books you really don’t enjoy?

Yes, unfortunately  I do not read science fiction.

What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time…

Guess what. I am a full time writer and it has been lucrative for me. I make a very decent income just from writing. And there are many successful Indie Authors that will tell you the same thing.

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

I use laptop write, because that way I can write wherever I am.

Where do you get support from? Do you have friends in the industry?

My fellow authors and of course my loyal fans who are absolutely the best. And I do read and answer every email I receive.

 

How do you tell a man there is something wrong with his child?

This is by far one of the best books I have read. Lorhainne Eckhart proved herself yet again  by pulling you in with a heartfelt story and keeping your attention with the passion that fills   the pages. ~ ROMANCE JUNKIES

WHAT IS HARDEST – GETTING PUBLISHED, WRITING OR MARKETING?

Until independent publishing took off I would definitely say the hardest task was getting published. It seemed to be a chicken and egg situation. No agent, no publisher. No publisher, no agent. I was extremely fortunate in that I had a successful author who became so excited by my research when I showed it to him that he immediately called his publisher to tell him he must publish the book. The publisher, Tom Maschler of Jonathan Cape, needed no persuasion. He became hooked and was 100% supportive and certain it would become a best-seller. I hadn’t actually written a word, I had no agent and yet here I was talking to a top publisher who was more excited than I was! Now, these days, with the growth of independent publishing, it is easy to publish a book. The hard part is marketing it. I think one needs to be very tech savvy and familiar with all the social networks to make a success of it. Unfortunately I am neither.

IF YOU COULD HAVE A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANYONE – DEAD OR ALIVE – WHO WOULD YOU INVITE AND WHY?

For the living guests I would invite Rachel Maddow because I love politics and I would dearly love to have been a political journalist. And Maddow is simply the best and brightest of all of them all today.

I would invite Imelda Marcos (former First Lady of the Philippines) because I have written scathingly about her numerous times in the past. I feel I owe her at least a decent dinner for never having had me thrown in gaol or had me assassinated as was the fate of many of her other enemies. And, let’s face it she is very entertaining.

I would invite Eddie Izzard because he has the funniest one-liners in the business and would poke fun at Imelda and keep us in hysterics the whole night and, thus, prevent the conversation from ever becoming too serious.

For guests who have died, I would love to have met the writer, adventurist, diplomat, great English eccentric and my secret heroine, Gertrude Bell who felt equally at home “sitting in a palace with Kings as she did squatting with nomads in a tent in the desert.” I feel equally at ease in all these situations too so would be fascinated to meet her and listen to her and exchange notes.

My next guest would be Oscar Wilde, also known for his one-liners, his acerbic wit and his irreverence. It would be delightful to hear his views on the current marriage equality laws.

And my final guest would have to be, of course, Stephen Ward. I have often wondered how he would react to someone who has taken five years out of her life to prove to the world that he was innocent of all charges and who is still working towards having his conviction overturned.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS HOW WRITERS CAN RELAX?

I would advise not to put yourself under too much pressure.  Unless you are writing to a deadline, don’t feel you have to finish the article or the book until you are ready to do so. Too many times in the past I have forced myself to finish an article for no other reason than I want to move on to the next project. Just remember the next project can always wait. Write at a pace that suits you. Be gentle, kind and respectful to yourself.

WHAT COLOUR REPRESENTS YOUR PERSONALITY THE MOST?

Green is my colour. It is the colour of the environment in which I live. It is a restful and reassuring colour. I love trees. I love open meadows. I love savannahs stretching out into the horizon. I love the Spring when suddenly, after the drab months of winter, everything becomes green and hopeful, heralding the long, hot summer. Green is definitely my colour.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MEAL?

My favourite meal has to be a hot bowl of vegetable curry with steamed rice followed by organic 75% dark chocolate. I’m not sure that they would really go together, I’ve never actually tried the combination. But, individually, they are my favourite foods so surely that would mean together they would make my favourite meal?

Do you find it hard to share your work?

No. Sharing my work is why I write. Taking criticism can sometimes be difficult. I try to have an attitude that looks at every comment from readers as an opportunity to learn and improve.

Do you plan to publish more books?

Absolutely. I just signed a contract for my third novel, The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky. It’s being released in May, 2014.

What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time…

I was fortunate to enter the software industry in its early days (think punch cards) and have had a lot of success over the years. That’s what allowed me to write full time now.

What other jobs have you had in your life?

Besides a software engineer, manager, and executive? I was in the army, drove trucks in the garment industry and was a dishwasher/potscrubber in a kitchen.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

I’m happy with my current circumstance and whenever I get a bit itchy, my wife and I travel.

Is there any books you really don’t enjoy? I can’t remember the names of those books but they were books that didn’t capture my attention with either too much introductory descriptions or the story just wasn’t for me. I love old books partly because it gives you a genuine idea of the time period when written.

What do you hope your obituary will say about you? “Was he/she really the Holy Ghost Writer?”

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live? I can’t say because of the contest to discover my identity, however, I have had more impacting life adventures spanning the globe than you may find in a series of good novel.

How did you develop your writing? My father was a writer and he wrote me a lot of letters, once saying, “The art of writing is re-writing”, which I took to heart but need to practice more. However, I’m sometimes afraid to lose the original candid inspiration in too much rewriting.

Where do you get your inspiration from? From life’s ups and downs, traveling, reading books and magazines, newspapers, watching television, movies, studying people including their language patters.

The Sovereign Order of Monte Cristo is a continuation of The Count of Monte Cristo (Book I), related through the voice of Sherlock Holmes and The Sultan of Monte Cristo (Book II). It includes exhilarating new adventures, characters, and ideas, carrying the reader past book I and II and into book III of an ever-expanding new series based on the classic.

What has been your best compliment?

There have been a number, so it’s hard to pick just one.  I liked the reviewer who said Nicholas was her favorite part of the book and called him “complex, romantic, and brooding.”  I wanted him to be a lot deeper than the average hero of a romance novel.    Another great line from a reviewer was “Enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.”   As a writer, you always want to keep the reader turning pages.  And I was happy with Kirkus Reviews’ description of my book: “British history and contemporary conspiracy collide in this satisfying novel.”  That comment made me feel that I had accomplished my goal of  weaving the two stories together in a way that a reader would understand.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Keep writing.  And find a really good editor who understands your book and your unique style.

What is your favorite quality about yourself?

My optimism.

What is my least favorite quality?

I work too hard.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

I really loved writing this book, and I would love for readers to share their experiences with Dance For a Dead Princess with me, whether positive or negative, because the best way to grow as a writer is to know what your readers think about your work.

My support comes from my family and my sister. My editor is very supportive. I do have some wonderful friends in the industry.

How much sleep do you need to be your best?

I need to sleep at least seven hours.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?

What’s the craziest writing idea you’ve had?

I want to be a screenwriter. That’s a crazy idea! I mean, it seems crazy…especially since I’m in my 40s. I’ve taken screenwriting courses and I’ve written a screenplay. I guess we’ll see what happens.

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?

The best advice I’ve ever gotten was from a friend who was older and wiser than me. When I complained to her that my children woke up at 7 a.m., filled with mass amounts of energy; and therefore, I couldn’t get any writing done, she asked me, “So what are you doing at 5 a.m.?” I soon found out that coffee tastes really good at 5 a.m.

Hidden talent?

There’s not much talent here, just persistence.

Love East Indian food! Love Mexican. Love Greek. Love Italian. Love Japanese.

What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

The next Star Trek movie!!

How long have you been writing? And who or what inspired you to write?

I’ve been writing for publication for about seven years now. I’m inspired to write by many people and many experiences, but ultimately, I write because I can’t stop writing. I swear. I’ve tried. I just can’t. My mind is powered by this story generator that keeps going and won’t quit.

What inspired you to write this book?

I was inspired to write The Curse Giver when I came across an ancient pair of clay tablets that popped up on my screen one night while I was researching another story. The clay tablets dated from 600 BC and were part of the same collection that gave us the famous Gilgamesh epic. Visually, the tablets weren’t much to look at, chicken scratches on clay. But the translated words had a huge impact on me.

“May all these [gods] curse him with a curse that cannot be relieved, terrible and merciless, as long as he lives, may they let his name, his seed, be carried off from the land.”

I know, hardly an inspiration for most. Me? I immediately thought of the man who had been thus cursed, of the pain and hardship such a curse would bring upon him and his people, of the character that eventually became Bren, Lord of Laonia, in The Curse Giver.

I started to think: Who would cast a curse like that and why? What kind of creature could be capable of such powerful evil? What would motivate a person to curse another? A new character began to emerge in my mind, the curse giver herself, someone whose understanding of good and evil was very different from my own.

And, once cursed, how could a person defend himself? A third character emerged from this question, Lusielle, a common remedy mixer, a healer of bodies and souls, someone who didn’t realize the scope of her own strength until it began to transform her life.

With Bren, Lusielle and the curse giver thus crystalized, I set out to write this fast, plot-twisting fantasy romance about an innocent woman condemned to die for a crime she didn’t commit, who must ally with the cursed lord pledged to kill her in order to defeat the curse giver who has already conjured their ends. The Curse Giver is an epic fantasy story with brawn, brains, and lots of heart, something that I think your epic dark fantasy romance readers might enjoy.

Can you give us a go-for-the-gut answer as to why you wanted to be an author?

Nature and nurture. I was meant to write since as far back as I can remember. It helped that I was part of a family of avid readers. After I started writing, I couldn’t stop. I still can’t! That’s why I have to be an author. It’s not a choice. It was always meant to be.

What are the perks and the demands of being an author?

The biggest perk of being an author is that I get to practice the sweet craft of writing. That in itself is more than enough for me. But there are other perks as well, like setting up your own schedule, going to the office in your comfy clothes and working from home. I relish the thrill of the creative process. I get to spend my days telling stories, creating characters and coming up with plot twists. How cool is that? I love the fact that my direct supervisor is a cat and my performance evaluation comes straight from the readers. The readers are the greatest perk of all.

But there are also many demands. You need time to be an author—lots of time—and that means that other things, important things, often go by the wayside. Rest, recreation and relaxation are the first to go. You also need focus, drive and determination. You’ve got to be able to balance the self, generate ideas, put down the stories, edit, persevere and then do it all over again. You’ve got to have some staying power.

You also have to be comfortable with being alone for great portions of the journey. For most of us, the earnings curve is slow to grow while the expense curve spikes a lot faster. The physical demands of the trade are often overlooked and yet they shouldn’t be. Long hours of immobility, staring obsessively at a screen, can be both harmful and painful.

What genre would you place your books into?

Like the Stonewiser series, The Curse Giver falls into the fantasy genre and fits well in the subcategories of epic fantasy, dark fantasy and fantasy romance.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book, then choose the title?

I usually discover the title of my novels at the very moment when I write it for the first time into the story. It can happen early on, during the opening paragraph or late in the process. It’s really neat. It’s always a “wow” moment.

Do you tend to base your characters on real people, or are they totally from your imagination?

My characters belong to my imagination, and yet my imaginary worlds feel very real to me.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? Do you listen to music, sit in a certain chair, write in a particular place?

I’m one of those people who prefer to write in silence. I guess my mind is way too noisy as it is! I have a writing studio in my home, a cozy little room that opens up to a veranda overlooking a beautiful, spring-fed river. It’s quiet and peaceful, and it’s my favorite place to write. I like to sit in my favorite chair, an ergonomic design that offers excellent support for the long hours of writing.

Are you published for the first time or are you multi-published?

I’m a multi-published author. My first three books are part of the Stonewiser series, and they include Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone (2009), Stonewiser: The Call of the Stone (2010), and Stonewiser: The Lament of the Stone (2012). I’m really excited about my latest book, The Curse Giver (July 2013), a stand-alone fantasy romance that has just been released by Twilight Times Books.

How do you think book publishing has changed over the years?

I think the book publishing industry has been through some cataclysmic changes in the last few years. Just look at how the rise of Amazon has completely changed the field. The advent of the e-book, the decline of the bookstore, the growth explosion of the self-publishing industry, these are only a few of the elements that have contributed to reshape the industry. From the technical innovations that have reshaped the industry, to our attitudes about reading, writing and publishing, to the shifts in how we read, buy and promote books, I’m blown away every day by how fast and thoroughly the industry is channeling change.

What is one thing you’d like to jump on the rooftop and scream about?

Common sense. Is there any of it left in the world?

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

I shy away from giving advice to aspiring writers because the journey can be very different for each one of us, and we all tackle the road in different ways. But if you pressed me on this, I would say that, above everything else, a writer has to write. So write, write often, write a lot and write with passion; and don’t forget to learn from the experience.

Can you share with us your current work in progress?
I’m currently working on several different projects, including a contemporary dark fantasy with a Latin twist and another standalone fantasy romance that takes place in the world of The Curse Giver. It’s not a sequel, not exactly, but rather a related novel. It’s currently called The Soul Chaser.  Also, the Stonewiser series is coming out in audiobook. Do you plan to publish more books?

The Good Life series is a trilogy, so yes I do.  I’m hoping to complete the trilogy by the spring.  And after that… I have an idea for a YA paranormal series.  I don’t want to give away the details, but it’s going to be fun to write!

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

Ever since I was little, I always had the romantic notion that someday I would write longhand in journals.  But, realistically, that’s not how my brain works.  I’ll write a sentence on my laptop and then rewrite it sometimes a dozen times.  While I still harbor those romantic notions, writing in longhand would never work for me.

How much sleep do you need to be your best?

I wish I could get by with less sleep, but I’m a crabby zombie if I sleep less than eight hours a night.  Nine hours would be even better, but the demands of work, family, and writing won’t allow it.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?

Really, if my characters entertain my readers for a few hours, then I’m doing my job.  It’s hard to predict how many readers I’ll ever have, but I would feel like a success if my readers follow me from one book to the next.

I wrote it because there hasn’t yet been any major successful series pertaining to an alien invasion. I also wrote it to bring people closer together. Read it, and you’ll know what I mean.

What genre of books do you adore?

Historical romance novels are my guilty pleasure. I often wish I could write those, but I’m the exception that proves the rule about writing what you love to read. I’ll leave historicals to the experts and savor them instead.

What book should everybody read at least once?

The Hobbit. No, Little Women. Oh, I know! To Kill a Mockingbird. Wait… does there have to be a final answer?

Are there any books you really don’t enjoy?

My imagination is too vivid and I’m too much of a wimp to really enjoy horror novels, so while I respect the genre and the authors who handle it well, I’ve only read a handful of them (and most of those still haunt me).

What do you hope your obituary will say about you?

While I hope that day is far away – there is so much I have left to write and see in this world, I would like my obituary will say I inspired someone to reach further and to strive for their big dreams despite the obstacles. And I it would mean even more if that obituary says my family loved me and knew I loved them with all of my heart.

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?

I was born and raised in Nebraska and I spent many of my summers with my grandparents in their retirement community in California. It sounds weird, but many of my best friends growing up were senior citizens and I benefitted from an interesting balance of Midwestern and West Coast experiences.

During an extended visit with my aunt in South Carolina, I met the man who became my husband. We lived in Indiana for several years before he surprised me with a career move to South Carolina and we’ve been here for fourteen years and counting.

Bouncing between those eclectic locations in my childhood has influenced my research and preferences for various settings when it comes to my writing. Bulletproof is set in Boston, Double Vision (the sequel) is set in New York City, the Shadows of Justice series is set in Chicago and the Matchmaker series is set in Charleston.

Each book has a distinct feel and I try to capitalize on the factors that make each city atmosphere unique. It’s rather fascinating to realize I have yet to set a story on the West Coast. Hmm, something to work on.

What book should everybody read at least once?

I’m going to cheat on this question, because I have three:  The Bible, Les Miserable’s, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

How did you develop your writing?

The hard way!  J  I’ve been a voracious and eclectic reader ever since I can remember.  When other guys were focusing on athletics, memorizing sports trivia, or talking about cars, I carried on a not-so-secret love affair with reading. For me, the smell of an old book is like a pheromone.  I love libraries, I love books, and I love reading.  I’ve had the same mistress since I was ten.

Books.

With that kind of foundation, I guess it was only a matter of time before I decided to give writing a try.  I started out writing poetry, then tried short stories, and finally realized that full-length novels were my niche.  In 1984 I had what I thought was a pretty cool idea for a really big story spanning two millennia, a couple characters having a conversation in my head,  and an opening line:  April is a month to be reckoned with.

I sat down and started writing—longhand–on a legal tablet every chance I got.

Several years later I had a manuscript that was longer than Moby Dick, Atlas Shrugged, and War and Peace.  I sent the behemoth off to a NY Agent and received an eight page, single-spaced rejection letter (which I paid for!).

I was depressed for a while, then shook the dust of my feet and carved my baby up into three books.  A couple of years later I sold the story to Crossway Books, and officially became a published author.

That’s when the real challenges began.

But that’s another story, best told on a cold evening over a hot cup of Honduran coffee or Black Tea from the Ukraine–and some soft chocolate chip cookies.

If you could study any subject at university what would you pick?

If I were to go back to college today, I would pursue a Ph.D. in Hebrew and Judaic Studies.  For the foreseeable future, the entire world is going to be focused on a nation that is about the size of New Jersey. Everything on this planet that has happened, is happening, and will happen in the future, culminates in Israel–in my lifetime.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

For now, I would find 5 acres in Evergreen, CO.  My wife and I would build our dream home there.  Eventually, we’ll be living in Jerusalem.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?

I’m 2 years into a 5-year plan.  Within 3 years I will be a full-time author, putting out 1 novel a year, living on a 5 acre ranch.  I will also have numerous speaking/teaching engagements, and my wife and I will be travelling the world, partly for research for my novels and partly for fun.  At least one of my novels will be made into a movie, or made-for- T.V. mini-series.  I will be helping others who desire to be published achieve their goal.
