Dangerous Past by A.F. Ebbers #AmReading #Suspense #Mystery

“Should we call the police?” Nicole said.

“I’m not sure.”

“Why not? Don’t you think it a bomb, anymore?”

Frank circled the container while he studied it. “Why would he try to harm you in the middle of the hearings? He’d only defeat himself.”

“Because he’s mad, he’s a nut, whatever. I don’t care. Call the damn police,” Nicole could feel the tension rising inside her.

Frank knelt down and looked closely at the box. “If it’s not a bomb and I call the cops, I would look paranoid. And I’m sure Fenton would alert the Senators to this.”

Frank got up and walked back to the garage. He returned with a long metal pole. He pushed a nearby redwood picnic table over and got behind it. “Go in the house. I think I’ll be safe here.”

“No. I’m not going to let you do this. I’m calling the police,” Nicole said in a panic-stricken voice.

Frank, breathing hard now, edged the pole towards the lid of the box. “Don’t bother. If it’s a bomb, they’ll hear.”

Nicole gasped and ran toward the house as Frank positioned the pole under the tip of the lid. When he heard the rear screen door slam he scrunched his face as he gently lifted the lid off the box. To his surprise it fell off easily, no levers or springs attached to it. “Put down the phone, Nicole, it’s a fake,” he yelled in relief.

Nicole came cautiously out the door. Frank got up and leaned over the container to look inside. A typed note lay on the bottom of the box. He picked the paper up and read it.

“Jesus!” Frank shouted. He dropped the note and dashed past Nicole to the house.

Nicole apprehensively picked up the note and read the frightening words, “Sorry, I forgot to enclose your gift. But I didn’t forget the gifts for your kids, Susan and Richard.”

She screamed, dropped the note and ran toward the house.
