Author Interview – Vicky Savage

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? No. I want my readers to be entertained—to laugh and cry along with my characters. I hope there are a number of thought-provoking themes in my book, but if all readers get out of it is a few hours of blissful escape, that’s reward enough for me.

Who designed your covers? My dear friend, Carrie Drazek, actor, writer, producer, agreed to design my covers for me. We have a great working relationship and were able to come up with cover designs that we both love.

Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you? Yes. Although when I first started writing, I knew no one in the industry. I joined my local writers association, but soon discovered it was populated mostly with “dabblers.” It did offer a great seminar on self-publishing, though, which I took and which was responsible for launching my career. Early on, a newbie blogger received one of my books in a giveaway and wrote an amazing review. I thanked her, and we struck up an internet friendship. I’m thrilled to say that her blog skyrocketed in popularity in a very short period of time, and she steadfastly supported me and my books every step of the way. Also, through this remarkable lady, I’ve met several other authors, both indie and traditionally published. These relationships have likewise been invaluable. The blogger’s name is Dr. Christina Hickey and her blog Ensconced in YA is one of the best out there. I’ll never be able to thank her enough!

What’s next for you? I have several projects in the pipeline for after I finish the Transcender Trilogy. I will definitely write another series, but I may take some time out to first write a comedy about a middle-aged woman who decides to become a Young Adult author and has to learn all about the self publishing biz, social media, author platforms, marketing, etc. Yup, it’s kind of autobiographical, but hilarious, just the same!

When you wish to end your career, stop writing, and look back on your life, what thoughts would you like to have? I hope I never stop writing! I will certainly write as long as I’m able. It keeps my mind sharp, it’s a constant learning process, and it’s a joyful occupation (except when it isn’t)! Whatever thoughts I have at the end of my life, I’ll put them down on the page.

What do you hope your obituary will say? Philanthropist and Pulitzer Prize winning author, Vicky Savage, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100. Her memoir, “One Hell of a Life!” has been on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list for 272 weeks straight. She is survived by her husband, two children, seven grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and her golden retriever, Bella. In lieu of flowers, please buy her books!
