Author Interview – Paula Renaye

How often do you write? And when do you write? I write constantly. From January 2011 to January 2013, I wrote nonstop. Literally, I averaged about 12 hours a day seven days a week. Some days I’d only work 8 hours and others 16. . I know, it sounds impossible and ridiculous, but it’s true. No one made me—I was driven. Getting that book written and my career moving forward was—and still is—my number one priority. I’m also working on a book about relationships—a topic that behooves me to make time to actually have one!

What motivates you to write? The voices…I have to stop the voices…. Seriously, I constantly have ideas popping into my head about a blog post or a book chapter, so I have learned to stop and write it down right then. I’m also highly self-motivated. I don’t need anyone standing over me or a deadline looming to write—I just do because it is who I am.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? I did a book tour when Living the Life You Love launched, which was fun. It was also pretty amazing to be standing in a book store a thousand miles from where I live and have someone walk up and say, “My mom has this book!” That happened several times and was so cool! Most of my travel now is for workshops and speaking events. Books are available for sale, of course, and a great takeaway to go with the message and teaching material from the presentation.

What book should everybody read at least once? I’m working on a relationship book right now, so I’m rehashing all the stupid things I did in relationships—and all the pain and suffering and lost years my delusions and crazy thinking cost me. The very best book on the subject I have ever read is What Smart Women Know by Steven Carter and Julia Sokol. So, if you’re in turmoil over a relationship, get the book today and believe.

Are there any books you really don’t enjoy? There are a zillion self-help books on the market and there are two types that I will not read—those filled with airy fairy fluff to make you feel good in the moment and those written in an academic format and language. Both types bore me to tears. The “designed to make you feel good” books are more manipulative than tangibly life changing, and those with stiff and stilted language make my eyes glaze within seconds. Not surprisingly, I like books that are straightforward, direct and engaging.
